British authorities has placed an additional eleven more countries to its travel alert register concerning the dangers of methanol poisoning from tainted spirits.

The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only recently, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after a number of serious cases like the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.

Government Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of methanol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits overseas, opt for trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister said.

"If something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The complete roster of nations identified as posing a risk of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
