{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track right in his path
The alarming incident happened on the third rotation when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit track officials can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the FIA
"On lap three, safety personnel were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send officials were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what happened following that moment"
