‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s road from gurney to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in England, against the English side weeks after, he converted. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, well, he scored again. When he returned to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did their duty: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partly because of the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. But, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
The player believed it hard enough just to make the first team and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that produced Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of his career.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the first team but every phase you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, you have everything, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
